Robert DiScalfani
Director of Photography

Robert's interest in the moving image stems from comments he's received regarding his still photographs; that they seem like film stills. Robert agreed with these observations, and has always had an affinity for the 35mm format as well as the 16:9 aspect ratio. He is very comfortable with that frame, which allows for a natural composition. Robert strongly believes that ambient light reigns true; for him natural lighting induces a significant impact on the viewer -- people recognize that light and can relate to it. Only when necessary, the use of artificial light must seamlessly blend with the natural surroundings, as if leaving them untouched by technology.

For Robert, a good sense of the still image is of paramount importance to the cinematographer. Additionally, it is a compositional study of the elements within a frame. One cannot be haphazard nor take shortcuts. It is critical not to look exclusively at the center of the frame, but rather maintain an awareness of the background, rendering full dimension to the shot.

Robert studied at SUNY Buffalo and subsequently apprenticed with a catalogue photographer. Having been called a quintessential photographer on more than one occasion, his experiences include fashion, magazine work, portraits, album covers, and still life. He also studied 16mm film at New York University's school of continuing education program.

His work has been shown in the Gothenberg Photo Festival in Sweden as well as the David Allen Gallery.
